2 drivers taken into custody after California checkpoint

On Aug. 15, the Walnut Creek Police Department conducted a sobriety checkpoint between the hours of 9 p.m. and 2 a.m. During that time, they made contact with 1,060 drivers and asked six to pull over for further examination. Of those who were asked to pull over, two drivers were taken into custody for driving under the influence.

DUI deal requires UFC title contender to spend 1 day in jail

Prosecutors in California entered into a plea agreement with the UFC fighter Nick Diaz in July 2015 in connection with a number of criminal charges including two counts of driving under the influence. The former welterweight title contender had been facing significant jail time, but a deal struck by his attorneys will see him spend just one day behind bars. Diaz was charged with DUI in 2013 and 2014.

A California man from Sunnyvale with one prior DUI conviction now faces 47 years and six months in prison after another drunk driving incident killed three out of four other people involved in a 2013 accident. The defense argued that the accident constituted manslaughter and not the three counts of second-degree murder the driver was charged with, but this argument did not work in court when the man was sentenced on March 13.

Man taken into custody at California drive-thru

A man who police say was asleep inside of his silver sedan was taken into custody for suspicion of drunk driving on Jan. 18. Authorities say that the man was making his second trip through a restaurant drive-thru when he fell sleep with his foot on the brake pedal. A police cruiser was positioned in front of the man's car to ensure that it could not roll while he slept.

Multi-car crash kills 1 in Oakland; driver charged

The California Highway Patrol say that a pileup allegedly caused by a suspected drunk driver and a disabled vehicle on Interstate 580 in Oakland resulted in the death of a man. According to reports, the accident happened around 11:20 p.m. in the westbound lanes of the highway on Nov. 24.
