Sex crimes: California psychologist facing rape charge

Some female military members have accused a clinical psychologist of raping them while they were in counseling for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Ironically, they sought therapy because they said they were the victims of sex crimes. The 41-year-old man has been charged with three counts of felony sexual assault for allegedly raping these patients between 2014 and 2015 at a California air base. He has pleaded not guilty to all charges.

The psychologist apparently used a technique referred to as exposure therapy, which entailed asking the women to have intercourse with him, moving the sessions to his private residence. One of the women said she was seeking treatment after being raped while on duty in Afghanistan. She said the psychologist allegedly told her by having sex with him she would have a positive and loving experience.

Another of the man's patients said she was supposedly told to perform oral sex on him as part of her therapy. The psychologist treated more than 100 patients before his license was suspended in 2016. A military spokesperson said the military does not condone exposure therapy. The accused is in custody with his bail set at $750,000.

Life for California residents found guilty of sex crimes will likely never be the same. They are considered sex offenders by the state and will have their names listed on state and federal sex offenders registries. So, enlisting the help of a criminal attorney may be the best decision someone accused of these crimes can make. Having a lawyer's help early on may helpful in mounting an aggressive defense against the charges.
