Funds collected by the government for the maintenance of the public water utility have allegedly been mishandled, says the state attorney general. Three employees of a rural water utility in California are facing charges that they used public funds for unauthorized purposes. Because strict penalties are often imposed on those who break the law, people facing such accusations will need to prepare a strong criminal defense.
The three individuals charged were responsible for managing the public water agency. Alongside charges of mishandling more than $100,000 in public funds, the three were also charged with improper disposal of hazardous waste. Barrels of waste were found buried on the property at the water agency.
The charges allege that the two managers and a third employee used the agency's money to fund housing, slot machines, kitchen appliances, vehicles, baseball tickets and concert tickets. Prosecutors came to their conclusions after a 2017 state audit of the rural, central California location. After the audit, the agency overhauled the management staff and its own policies.
A town certainly deserves to trust those who are in charge of the public funds, but such accusations must be based on facts and evidence. The case against the three California individuals must be proved in a court of law, and all are presumed innocent until proved guilty. Each individual will have the opportunity to defend against the charges.
