A DUI may mean a DOA for your J-O-B

You probably know this now, but the lapse in judgment that led to your recent DUI arrest is likely to cause you headaches that linger beyond the day after the party. Even before your trial or conviction, you may begin to experience the negative consequences. For example, your current employer may decide to discipline or even terminate you because of the incident.

While this sounds harsh, many industries and businesses strive to maintain a perfect reputation, and an employee who was arrested or convicted for drunk driving may clash with the principles of the company. However, even if you haven't found that perfect business to work for, a conviction for this offense may create a roadblock that makes it difficult to reach your goals.

DUI may complicate your search for work

While it may not be impossible to find work in your area of interest, having a DUI on your record could make your job search considerably harder. You may find it challenging to snag a job after a DUI conviction if you are interested in any of the following:

  • Jobs that include driving, such as trucking, cab driver, delivery or sales
  • Employment sectors that require stellar background checks, such as education, law enforcement or medicine
  • The military
  • Work that requires licensing, such as nursing, real estate or insurance

Even if these industries do not reject your job application because of the DUI conviction, they may see the mark on your record as an indication of poor judgment or a tendency to make bad choices.

You have rights!

Although the arresting officer may tell you about your rights to remain silent and have an attorney, you may not hear about the many other rights that may be in jeopardy once police take you into custody. You may inadvertently forfeit those rights without even realizing the severity of the consequences.

Because some of those rights are time-sensitive, you would benefit from legal counsel as soon as possible after your arrest. By contacting an attorney, you can be sure that you will know your rights and have someone beside you who will fiercely defend them. Depending on the circumstances surrounding your arrest and your DUI history, your attorney will work for the best possible resolution for your situation.
