Woman accused of drunk driving following serious accident

There are many signs that a person is under the influence of alcohol. However, these signs could also be indicators that a person is distracted, confused or suffering from a medical condition. Despite these other possibilities, police often assume that a car accident was caused by a person who was drinking and driving. For example, one woman in California was recently accused of drunk driving following an accident.

The incident happened one evening in late October. According to reports, a vehicle driven by a 19-year-old female rolled before coming to a rest on its wheels. The cause of the accident is unclear. An 18-year-old male riding in the backseat suffered serious injuries after being ejected out of the back window. Emergency responders discovered him at the scene and transported him to the hospital.

The front passenger, a 16-year-old male, appeared in good condition, but he stopped breathing at the scene. Both he and the driver were also transported to the hospital. The driver was arrested at the hospital, accused of drunk driving causing major injuries, and is being held on bail.

In addition to the cause of the California accident, it is also unclear how the woman's blood alcohol content was determined. In some situations, tools used to make such determinations malfunction. Because of the potential for false results, it may be necessary to have a professional with experience with drunk driving charges review the case. As in all cases involving criminal charges, there must be sufficient evidence to prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt -- a standard purposefully set high in order to prevent wrongful convictions.
