Most people would likely agree that police officers have difficult jobs. In addition to dealing with crime scenes, they also must face victims of crimes -- including the family members of the deceased -- who demand justice. To help these victims recover, police in California are often desperate to provide answers and assurances that those responsible for harm are held accountable for their actions. Thanks to the protections afforded by law, any criminal charges must be supported by evidence. In one recent case, however, the evidence against a young man charged with drunk driving in an alleged hit-and-run accident is unclear.
According to reports, the alleged hit-and-run accident happened one evening in late July. Unfortunately, many of the details regarding the accident, including the injuries suffered by the alleged victim or whether the victim was in a crosswalk at the time of the accident, are unclear. However, police have made an arrest in the case.
According to reports, police found the 23-year-old man, who has now been charged as a result of the accident, in his vehicle. He has since been arrested for drunk driving. In addition to the other issues that are lacking clarity, how police connected the man to the accident is unclear. In fact, police are asking that anyone with information regarding the accident contact them.
While the pursuit of justice is understandable, it is necessary to remember that even those suspected or accused of crimes in California and across the country are considered not guilty until proved otherwise. In order to prevent innocent people from being wrongfully convicted of drunk driving and other criminal charges, the burden of proof is high. In an attempt to ensure that he is treated lawfully throughout the criminal process and that he fully understands the charges he faces, this young man may choose to hire an experienced defense attorney to guide him throughout the process.
