California rehab founder accused of sex crimes, among others

There are a variety of different types of people in California. Many, for example, dedicate their personal and professionals lives to helping others. Unfortunately, one man who opened 19 facilities dedicated to sober living has since been arrested on sex crimes.

The man is accused of the sexual assault of nine patients. These alleged crimes are said to have occurred from 2012 to 2016. In addition, he is accused of providing drugs to his residents. Allegations against the 55-year-old man include rape, sexual exploitation and rape of an intoxicated person. If convicted of these charges, he could spend the rest of his life in prison.

In addition to the sex crimes charges, he and a business partner also face charges related to money laundering and insurance fraud. Among other allegations, he and his chief financial officer are accused of billing insurance companies for services that were not provided. As a result, insurance companies reportedly paid $44 million.

When a person is facing multiple charges -- especially if those charges are related to sex crimes -- it is often easy to forget that everyone suspected of a crime is presumed innocent until and unless proved otherwise. In order to gain a conviction against this man, California prosecutors must have sufficient evidence to prove his guilt beyond a reasonable doubt -- a purposefully high standard that is often difficult to meet. Due to the seriousness of the potential consequences of a conviction, he may choose to seek an experienced attorney to serve as his advocate throughout criminal proceedings.
