Drunk driving charges follow alleged hit-and run in California

There seems to be a love/hate relationship with social media in this country. While many people utilize a variety of different sites, just as many are critical of those who are perceived to post too much information online. In fact, some in California seem eager to assume that a young woman accused of drunk driving after an alleged hit-and-run accident is guilty simply because she posted a photo of herself with her new vehicle on a social media site hours before the accident is said to have occurred.

Police claim that the incident happened one night in late September. According to reports, a bicyclist was struck from behind while riding on a California roadway. The cyclist, whose identity is unclear, reportedly only suffered relatively minor injuries, potentially including a broken leg and cuts.

The driver of the car that struck the victim is accused of failing to remain at the scene. However, police arrested a woman whose car was allegedly found near the accident. Officials say that her car had damage to its passenger and driver side. The 22-year-old woman was reportedly arrested following the administration of field sobriety test. Media sources claim that the woman posted on social media hours before the accident, indicating that she recently purchased the car that is believed to have played a role in the crash; that post has allegedly been removed.

It is not unusual for a person in California to show pride in a recent, major purchase, but the fact that news stations are reporting her posts could color the general public's views toward the young woman. Regardless, the woman -- as well as anyone facing criminal charges -- is considered innocent until -- and only if -- sufficient evidence is provided to the court to prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt. Because of the potential consequences of a drunk driving conviction, many facing this and related charges ask a defense attorney with experience with such cases to help guide them throughout the process.
