California man facing yet another DUI charge

On Nov. 4, a California man was arrested on suspicion of drunk driving north of Petaluma. He has five prior DUI convictions, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Authorities said a CHP officer spotted a Dodge sedan traveling 70 mph in a 55 mph zone on Stony Point Road near Pepper Road around 8:30 p.m. The officer conducted a traffic stop after observing the sedan accelerating and weaving near Mecham Road. Upon approaching the vehicle, he allegedly saw a 24-ounce beer can and a partially consumed whiskey bottle in the sedan. The driver, a 44-year-old resident of Santa Rosa, admitted that his driver's license had previously been suspended for DUI and that he had five prior drunk driving convictions.

The defendant was arrested on suspicion of DUI and driving on a suspended license. According to authorities, his license has been suspended 12 times. He now faces a felony charge for having four drunk driving arrests within 10 years. He was released on $100,000 bail and will appear in Sonoma County Superior Court at a later date.

California residents who have been charged with driving under the influence can face harsh consequences, particularly if they have been convicted of drunk driving in the past. Typical penalties can include steep fines, license suspension and significant jail time. As a result, those who find themselves in this type of a situation may find it advisable to contact a criminal defense attorney as soon as possible in order to determine the strategy to use before or at trial. This can include attempting to negotiate an agreement with the prosecutor for a reduced penalty in exchange for a plea of guilty.
