Mother charged with child endangerment after arrest

On Feb. 15, a 27-year-old California woman was taken into custody after she was found wandering around half-naked and disoriented on a Lancaster street. Authorities said they later discovered she left her toddler home alone.

According to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, deputies believed that she was under the influence of drugs and arrested her in the area of Division Street and West Avenue K at approximately 9 a.m. Shortly afterward, the department received a report of the woman's abandoned car nearby with the engine running and doors open. While searching the car, deputies found a child's car seat and a cellphone with photos of a little girl, leading them to believe the woman had a toddler that may be in need of care.

Fearing that the child may have wandered off, deputies searched the area and contacted other family members. They eventually went to the woman's home and heard a child crying inside. They forced entry and found a 17-month-old girl. She was hungry and needed a diaper change but was otherwise unharmed. Authorities suspect she may have been left alone for up to five and a half hours. The woman was booked into the LASD Lancaster station and charged with child endangerment, child abandonment and indecent exposure. She was held on $100,000 bail.

Anyone facing charges stemming from a drug offense may help their situation by retaining a criminal defense attorney to review the case and help build a legal defense strategy to fight that allegations. For instance, there are medical conditions that could cause a person to appear to be under the influence of drugs or alcohol when they are not. If the defendant is suffering from addiction, it may be possible to negotiate with prosecutors for a reduction of charges in exchange for the defendant attending a drug rehabilitation program.
